Common Reasons for Surrender

People surrender this breed because they do not have time to train the dog or the training was lacking.

The English Cocker Spaniel has a cheerful disposition, is usually great with older children, and has a reputation for being a sweet family dog. This breed is a good hunter and companion.

The English Cocker Spaniel needs to be groomed frequently and needs her ears checked at least every other day to be sure they are dry and clean.

The English Cocker Spaniel needs a corn- and wheat-free diet. Some dog owners find this diet helps to prevent ear infections in dogs, but it also deters allergies.

This breed needs at least one hour of exercise per day. You may want to take the dog for a walk on a leash or meet at a dog park where your English Cocker Spaniel can socialize with humans and other dogs.

Possible Health Issues

Because this breed has long droopy ears, bacteria easily form in moisture and the English Cocker Spaniel is susceptible to ear infections and possible deafness. They are also prone to heart disease, seizures, familial nephropathy, and hip dysplasia.

This dog thrives when kept in a house with a yard where he can run around outside.

Although many English Cocker Spaniel owners like taking their dog to the groomer, you can learn to cut this dog’s hair around the ears especially and brush him at least every other day.

This breed responds well to dog obedience school and training at home. Always use positive reinforcement.

The English Cocker Spaniel loves attention from her people! If provided basic care, attention, and exercise, this dog will be happy.
